ベトナムの首都ハノイのノイバイ空港に降り立ったのは11月の初旬、観光にはちょうどいい季節だ。
空港から市内へ行くのにリーズナブルな方法は８６番バスに乗ることだ。料金は4万5千ドン、日本円で約270円前後だろう。バスは車内に荷物も人も載せるので、混雑時はカオス状態になる。足の踏み場もない中をぬって車掌が料金を徴収にくる。
ハノイの街はバイクの交通量がとても多い。無数のバイクが右から左から前から後ろから信号に関係なく突っ込んでくる。現地の人に言わせると「信号は飾り物」だそうだ。不思議なことにそんなベトナムの交通事故死は2010年の約1万3千人から最近では約30％減少しているそうだ。
ベトナムには8カ所の世界遺産が存在する。そのうち比較的有名なハロン湾とチャンアンはハノイをベースに日帰り観光ができるスポットだ。
ハロン湾はハノイから東へ約140㎞に位置する波が穏やかな大海原に大小3,000もの奇岩が連なる景勝地だ。伝承では、中国がベトナムに侵攻してきた時、竜の親子が現れ敵を破り、口から吐き出した宝石が湾内の島々になったと伝えられている。
チャンアンはハノイから南へ約90㎞のニンビン省に位置している。チャンアンの景観関連遺産はタムコックや古都・ホアルー、ホアルー特殊用途林などの景観全体が評価され、2014年に複合遺産として世界遺産に登録された。
チャンアンのタムコックは、カルスト地形の景勝地で、洞窟を竹のボート(実際には鉄製に竹が敷かれている)に乗ってサオ・ケー川（Sao Khe River）を進む。川岸にそびえる石灰岩の峰々の壮大な美しさは「陸のハロン湾」とも呼ばれている。
今回のハノイへの旅は、ベトナムの文化を知る上で貴重な旅となった。上記観光地の説明のほとんどはガイドのドンさんから聞いた話だ。ドンさんはベトナムの歴史と文化を熱く語ってくれた。「ベトナムが平和なのはこのほんの50年足らずのことなんです。歴史は歴史として、今、ベトナムの人は世界の人と仲良くしなきゃいけない。」
何故ベトナムの人がフレンドリーなのか、こうした考え方をきちんと教育されていると聞いた。今ベトナムはとても勢いのある国の一つとなった理由を垣間見た気がした。

I landed at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi, Vietnam's capital, in early November, the perfect season for sightseeing.
A reasonable way to get from the airport to the city is to take bus number 86. The fare is 45,000 VND, which is about 270 yen in Japanese yen. The bus carries both luggage and people on board, so it becomes chaotic when it is crowded. The conductor comes to collect the fare while walking through the crowded streets.
There is a lot of motorbike traffic in Hanoi. Countless motorbikes rush in from the right, left, front and back, regardless of traffic lights. Locals say that "traffic lights are just for decoration." The number of traffic deaths in Vietnam has decreased by about 30% from about 13,000 in 2010.
Vietnam has eight World Heritage sites, of which the relatively well-known Halong Bay and Trang An are spots that can be visited as day trips from Hanoi.
Halong Bay is a scenic spot located about 140km east of Hanoi, with 3,000 strangely shaped rocks of various sizes strung together in the calm ocean. Legend has it that when China invaded Vietnam, a mother and child dragon appeared, defeated the enemy, and spat out jewels from their mouths, which became the islands in the bay.
Trang An is located in Ninh Binh Province, about 90 km south of Hanoi. Trang An's landscape-related heritage, including Tam Coc, the ancient capital of Hoa Lu, and the Hoa Lu Special Purpose Forest, was recognized as a mixed heritage site and registered as a World Heritage Site in 2014.
Tam Coc in Trang An is a karst scenic spot where you can ride through caves in a bamboo boat (actually a bamboo-lined steel boat) on the Sao Khe River. The magnificent beauty of the limestone peaks towering along the riverbanks has earned it the nickname "Halong Bay on land."
This trip to Hanoi was a valuable one for me in learning about Vietnamese culture. Most of the explanations about the tourist spots mentioned above were from our guide, Dong. Dong spoke passionately about Vietnamese history and culture. "Vietnam has only been at peace for the last 50 years or so. History is history, and now the Vietnamese need to get along with people from all over the world."
I heard that Vietnamese people are so friendly because they are properly educated to think this way. I felt like I got a glimpse of why Vietnam has become one of the most dynamic countries in the world.
