『Tabby Cat(タビーキャット)』

　タビーキャットとはトラ猫のことで、全身に縞模様を持つ猫の総称だ。その中でも大きく4つに分類されるそうだ。だが、どう分類されるかなんて興味はない。
　ある冬の日に、ヤツは突然いなくなった。
　いつも僕が通るとどこからともなく出てきて、オッサンのような風体をして乙女のような鳴き声ですり寄ってきた。「背中を撫でて、お尻を撫でて」と僕の顔を見ると背中を突き出してくる。一通り撫でてやると今度は首周りを出してくる。撫でている間はオッサンのいびきのような唸り声をあげている。
　でもその冬、突然いなくなった。僕はもう二度と会えないことを知っている。
　「ツンデレ」な性格なのはシバ(柴犬)だ。自分で考えて行動することを好み、納得しない限り動かない。
　その夏、シバは遠くへ行ってしまった。生きていればまたいつか会えるかもしれない。あるいは二度と会えないかもしれない。
　僕は旅猫になろう。旅キャット、イヤ、ただの駄洒落、オヤジギャグだ。
　オヤジギャグだが、僕は旅猫になる。
　「家に帰るまでが遠足です」と言われた。ならば家を出たら遠足だろう。吉行淳之介は「家から一歩外に出れば旅だ」と考えるヘンリー・ミラーに共感し「街角の煙草屋までの旅」を書いた。そして須田一政は「角の煙草屋までの旅」をカメラ毎日に連載した。
　旅猫になってオッサンの（”ような”ではなく）風体をして乙女のような鳴き声で眼に映るもの全てにすり寄ってみよう。二度と見えない何かが一瞬だけ見えるかもしれない。



『Tabby Cat』

A tabby cat is, simply put, a striped cat—a general term for cats whose coats are marked with stripes. They’re apparently divided into four main types, but I have no interest in how they’re classified.
One winter day, he suddenly vanished.
Whenever I walked by, he would appear out of nowhere. He looked like a gruff old man, yet he would rub up against me with the dainty voice of a young girl. “Stroke my back. Now my rump.” The moment he saw my face, he’d arch his back toward me. Once I’d obliged, he’d offer his neck next. All the while, he rumbled like an old man snoring.
And then, that winter, he was gone. I know I will never see him again.
Shiba was known for being “tsundere.” Independent-minded, he preferred to think and act for himself, and wouldn’t budge unless he was satisfied.
That summer, Shiba went far away. If he’s still alive, perhaps I’ll see him again someday. Or perhaps I never will.
I’ll become a traveling cat. A travel cat—no, that’s just a pun. A middle-aged man’s joke.
A dad joke, yes. But I’m going to become a traveling cat.
They say, “A field trip isn’t over until you get home.” Then leaving home must be the beginning of one. Jun’nosuke Yoshiyuki sympathized with Henry Miller, who believed that “the moment you step outside your house, you are already on a journey,” and he wrote A Journey to the Corner Tobacco Shop. Later, Issei Suda serialized A Journey to the Corner Tobacco Shop in Camera Mainichi.
So I will become a traveling cat—looking like an old man (not merely “like,” but truly one), meowing with the voice of a young girl, and rubbing up against whatever enters my field of vision.
Perhaps I might glimpse something that will never be seen again.
